California

2017-10-09 Westbound; San Francisco…

There are no planned activities today; the rally doesn’t officially start until tomorrow.  So, as we like to do, we decided to take a walk through an adjacent city; we decided upon San Francisco:

2017-10-09 California 01 San Francisco 01

Other than this selfie, we forgot to take any pictures while we were there… Oh, well!

In any case, we drove to Pleasanton, then took BART into The City (as the locals call it, as if it’s the only city in the world.  I thought it was silly when I first heard it in 1972, and I think it’s silly today…)

We did some walking and window shopping; Lynda wanted to do some serious shopping around Union Square, and I headed to Tadich Grill, where I met my former Partner at TCA, Thom Cox.  It was fun to be back in Tadich again, and it was great to catch up with Thom on the state of the world and the state of TCA.  I can’t comment on the state of the world, but apparently TCA is doing fine without me.  Yay!

After lunch, at about 3:00 pm, Lynda and I met up and returned to the Villa.

Happy Hours ensued, and an enjoyable time was had by all…

And since I have no other photos, here is our granddaughter, Roisin, outfitted for her Tae Kwon Do lesson…:

2017-10-08 Westbound; California and a mountain pass at 8,574 feet elevation!

We once again started the day by walking to Mom and Pops for breakfast.  Then we joined other LTAC members in a hike to a local waterfall!

Yes!  It’s up there!

2017-10-08 California 01 Carson City 01

It was a short hike, and pretty easy.  Carson City sits at about 4,800 feet elevation, and this was about a 200 feet climb (after a drive up the foothills…); we were almost a mile high!

Waterfalls never disappoint:

Along the way we were treated to views of the valley, fall colors, and unusual rock formations:

After the hike we returned to the Villa.  It was time to go…

We hit the road at about 1:00 pm.  We were shortly back in California.  We are headed to Jackson, CA, to attend the WBCCI Region 12 Rally.  We will be arriving early, so we will have some quiet time before the other 100 Airstreams arrive.

I didn’t think much about the drive; I just set the GPS in the truck and followed its directions.  As we wound our way through foothills, I casually asked Lynda to look on the map and see what the elevation of the pass was that we were driving through.  She said, “8,754′”.  What?  This may not be Rocky Mountain high, but it’s higher than we had ever been before.  Some people get altitude sickness at elevations like this.

Anyway, we drove around and around, and up and up.  We enjoyed the scenery:

2017-10-08 California 02 Views 032017-10-08 California 02 Views 01

The roads were very busy with tourists stopping alongside the road to photograph the fall colors, along with hunters, parked along the road and heading out across the open fields with their dogs…

We scaled the summit at 8,754′, and we headed downhill.  Then we were heading up again, and scaled two other passes at about 8,000′.  It was an exciting drive.  And then we headed down and down and down.  Jackson is at 1,200’…

It was not an easy drive.  Steep downhills, sharp curves, lots of cars going both ways… But we made it to Rancheria RV Resort, at the Rancheria Casino… It is a beautiful RV park!  Large spaces, nice concrete pads, lots of grass:

2017-10-08 California 03 Jackson 012017-10-08 California 03 Jackson 022017-10-08 California 03 Jackson 03

We set up, met a few of our neighbors (there are about 30 Airstreams in the park…), and Happy Hours ensued.  An enjoyable time was had by all…

PS:  In the middle of the night strong winds erupted suddenly.  Other than having to run outside to pull down the awnings, we had nothing much more than a lot of noise and a shaking Airstream.  However, this was the night that Napa and Sonoma counties caught on fire… We are glad it didn’t happen here…

2017-10-07 Westbound; Urban Rally in Carson City…

Saturday morning in Carson City dawned bright and clear.  We walked down Carson St. and went to Mom and Pops Diner for breakfast.  As we walked down the street we saw all the Airstreams that were parked along the street:

2017-10-06 California 02 Carson City 062017-10-06 California 02 Carson City 072017-10-06 California 02 Carson City 08

After breakfast we returned to the Villa and prepared it for the Open House.  The local papers had advertised that all are welcome to see the Airstreams.  So we cleaned up, put away stuff, and made the Villa look as nice as possible… We were told to be available from 10:00 am to Noon.

People started arriving at 10:00 am.  They were still coming through at 6:00 pm.  Apparently the newspapers said “all day”… But we don’t mind…

We did sneak away for a few minutes in the afternoon to do the “Wine Walk”.  Downtown Carson City does this the first Saturday every month. (On the third Saturday they do a beer crawl…)

We signed up, paid our $15.00, and received our wrist bands and our glasses.  There were over 60 merchants pouring wine throughout the downtown district.

Some had set up tables on the sidewalk, others had you come into their stores.  Note that this wasn’t some delicate wine tasting with good wines and tiny pours.  These were fairly average wines with full glass pours.  Ant no one was keeping count on how many times you asked for a glass of wine…  Between stores, there were throngs of people, carrying and drinking glasses of wine, and walking along the sidewalk… We’re not in California anymore!

2017-10-07 California 01 Carson City 04

Some places had entertainment: Irish music, similar to what we heard at the Ceilidhs in Nova Scotia…

2017-10-07 California 01 Carson City 05

Our final wine stop was at the local Elks Lodge.  After drinking our wine, and enjoying some of the food they had set out, we sat at the bar and watched college football.  And, since the bar was open, we were allowed to order drinks.  Let me tell you, if you like to drink and have the opportunity to drink in an Elks Club bar, you are in heaven!!!

We made our way back to the Villa and fixed a quick dinner; lookieloos were still coming through…  We left and walked to see an outdoor concert put on by some local musicians:

2017-10-07 California 01 Carson City 02

An added benefit of the concert was the ice cream store right there on the square:

2017-10-07 California 01 Carson City 03

We had a nice time hanging out in Carson City.  It is a friendly, nice little town.  They have just spent a ton of money redoing their streets, curbs, and sidewalks.  Now they just need to get a few more upscale businesses and fill in the “missing teeth” of the storefronts along the street.

We started to return to the Villa, but were distracted by a casino bar that had both the CAL game and the Dodgers game on the TVs just above the bar.  Drinks ensued and an enjoyable time was had by all.

PS:  The Dodgers had a better night than CAL…

2017-10-06 Westbound; Goodbye, California, Hello, Nevada…

We left Hat Creek mid-morning, and headed east.  Soon we were rewarded with a view of Lassen Peak in the distance:

2017-10-06 California 01 Lassen 01

We continued south, just west of the Nevada border, until we crossed over into Nevada near Reno:

2017-10-06 Map - Nevada

Our map is now complete, showing all the States we have visited on this trip, except for the five Canadian Provinces.  We’ll have to look for a combined map when we return home…

We soon at arrived in Carson City.  We were instructed to show up at exactly 2:00 pm, so we had two hours to kill.  We did some shopping and spent some quality time in a nearby Starbucks:

2017-10-06 California 02 Carson City 01

We are going to spend this weekend with the Lake Tahoe Airstream Club in what they call an Urban Rally; specifically, it is called Airstreams on Main.  There are 32 Airstreams parked along Carson Street – downtown Carson City – and in an adjacent parking lot.  It was great fun to attend an Airstream rally again after these many months.  We met many new friends and saw many interesting Airstreams:

Our main activity this evening was Happy Hours – over 60 people!  Quite a mob.  We also had some great singer/guitar entertainment…

And an enjoyable time was had by all…

2017-10-05 Westbound; California, here we come…

We left Junipers RV Park in Lakeview, OR and soon we reached the promised land:

2017-10-05 California 01

We are happy to be back in California; we left California on June 10…

Today we are heading into the Lassen National Forest and Burney Falls State Park.  We’ve wanted to see Burney Falls since we first heard about it in 2006.  Today is the day!

We had an uneventful drive south along the eastern border of California, not far from Nevada.

We reached Burney Falls State Park about noon.  The falls are not far from the Visitors Center; we soon had a peak at them as we started down the canyon:

2017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 01

The path takes us over the stream above the falls; interestingly, the stream flows mostly underground until about 3/4 mile upstream, where some of its water pops to the surface.  (More on this later…)

We crossed the bridge and walked through the woods, hearing the falls and occasionally getting a glimpse of them.  Along the way we had nice views of the stream.

2017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 022017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 032017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 042017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 052017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 062017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 07

Finally we were able to get a full view of the falls:

2017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 08

As we drew closer we noticed the interesting shape and location of the falls and the water:

2017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 092017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 10

Notice how the water is flowing not only over the top of the rocks, but from within the rocks as well!

The underground stream stays underground even as it comes to the surface 3/4 mile upstream, and it is this underground water that flows out of the layer of porous and fragmented rocks that are lodged between the harder basalt rock.  Here is the sign which explained the phenomenon:

2017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 11

2017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 12

We admired the blue color of the pool at the base of the falls; there were even men casting here:

2017-10-05 California 02 Burney Falls 13

(No fish in sight…)

We like walking to see waterfalls, as you may have noticed… We hope these are not our last…

We headed out of the State Park and drove about 25 miles to our campground for the night: Rancheria RV Park in Hat City:

2017-08-18 Westbound; Moving on to Old Montreal

We drove from Quebec to Montreal; it was a short drive, but we did have some heavy rain.  We arrived at the RV park – Camping Cle’ des Champs – a beautiful park, mainly set up for full- and mostly-timers who summer here, then flee to Florida or Arizona for the winter.  The sites are huge – about 5,000 sq. ft., and most are paved with stone pavers, with a storage shed, and a screened porch, or entire screened and glassed-in rooms, containing kitchens, dining areas and lounging areas.  Our site, where they park the overnighters like us, are also very nice, but not quite as luxurious as the seasonal sites:

We enjoyed some leisure time, planned our day in Montreal tomorrow, and Happy Hours ensued:

2017-08-18 Montreal 22 HH

Since I have no other photos today, I post photos of my grandchildren who are flying out from California to see us on Boblo Island in late August… This is what they look like at midnight while changing planes in Denver…

I don’t thing they were having an enjoyable time…

2017-07-24 Nor by Nor’east Caravan – Maine – Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Lobster!

Mt. Desert Island is quite a beautiful place, with rocky shores and quiet harbors.

2017-07-24 Acadia NP 01

Like Newport, RI, Mt. Desert Island was a favorite place for the very wealthy to have summer cottages.  However, rather than being sophisticated and elegant, filled with grand, showy homes, like Newport, MDI was known for its quiet, rustic ways.  Homes, while huge, and filled with servants, were simple, wood houses, with fireplaces and always set back into the wilderness.  Some of the houses from the late 19th century survive, but many were torn down by the 1950s because they were obsolete and too rustic for modern living.  The descendants of the original families who had homes here (Fords, Rockefellers, Astors, Vanderbilts) still have homes here, and many come for the summer season; but the houses are not as visible – they are mostly hidden in the woods…

The heart of social life, for those who participated, was (and is) the town of Bar Harbor. Many elegant hotels line the waterfront. Many of the families, though, stayed away from the town – they preferred to be in the woods, and along the sea, living the simple life – swimming, sailing, and taking long carriage rides along the carriage roads (mostly built by John D. Rockefeller). In fact, most of the land making up Acadia National Park was donated by the Rockefeller family.

We had been warned about the terrible traffic both in Bar Harbor, and in Acadia; we also were warned about road construction in the area.  So, armed with good maps we set off at 7:00 am (along with Larry and Kathy Warrren) to get an early start on the day.  We easily found the “good” road, and we easily found parking in Bar Harbor.  We strolled down empty streets; the only people out this early are folks heading for the whale watching boats. We were soon at our destination – Sunrise Café.  We enjoyed a nice quiet breakfast in this tiny place, then we walked along the Shore Path. The path runs right along the water’s edge, and it extends from the edge of town for about 1 ½ miles. We then could walk back along quiet residential streets. It was a great way to start the day.

2017-07-24 Bar Harbor 11

2017-07-24 Bar Harbor 12

Once back to the car we headed up Cadillac Mountain, the tallest “mountain” along the Atlantic coast – about 1,500 feet elevation. (In California we call these “hills”…)  From here you can see all the islands surrounding the main island of Mt. Desert Island.  The views are stunning!

As the park began getting busy we headed to the quieter side of the island, where many of the original wealthy families had their summer cottages.  We stopped in Seal Harbor, a beautiful place, and amazingly quiet.  The town of Seal Harbor consists of a church, an empty store building, a coffee house, and a bookstore.  And, of course, a real estate office.  There are three or four houses along the water’s edge, and many more in the hills.  All the houses are simple, neat, and unassuming.  There is a tiny Yacht Club perched on the side of the hill overlooking the harbor.

2017-07-24 Bar Harbor 15

2017-07-24 Seal Harbor 01

2017-07-24 Seal Harbor 02

Someone even built a very nice new vacation house right at the harbor’s edge:

2017-07-24 Seal Harbor 03

The next town is Northeast Harbor, a bustling place, filled with many art galleries. The harbor is much larger, and ferries run regularly between the harbor and two of the larger islands just off shore: Great Cranberry Island and Little Cranberry Island.  Many houses dot the streets of the town and the surrounding hills. People who live in Seal Harbor must come here to shop and eat.

2017-07-24 Bar Harbor 13

By now we were ready for lunch. We had been tipped off to another fabulous lobster pound, Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound. Only it was much more of a restaurant than a lobster shack. They served wine and offered napkins, eating utensils, and tools for eating the lobster.  Lobsters were great, but it was not as much fun as a real lobster pound…

We decided to call it a day and head back to the Villa. Tonight we had GAM #5, and we are hosting.  As we arrived at the RV Park it started to rain.  And it continued to rain.  Cold rain.  Maine rain.  We decided to have our GAM inside The Villa – all 10 of us.  It was cozy. But it was much nicer than sitting in the pavilion out in the cold.  We had great snacks and there was free flowing wine as we got to know another set of new friends. An enjoyable time was had by all…

2017-06-10 The Odyssey Begins – Leaving Irvine

It finally happened. Saturday, June 10 came and went and we are officially on our 4 month odyssey across and around the United States.

The week before was spent doing final packing and loading (Phil), and giving and grading final exams (Lynda). VCHS graduation was Friday night, June 9, and now Lynda is officially and finally retired!

Other last minute items have been completed:

Some weeks ago I finally confirmed what I had long suspected, but could never verify until now: Yes, you do need a special Driver License in California to tow a travel trailer (or fifth wheel trailer) over 10,000 lbs.  So I dutifully made my appointment at DMV, and took the written tests to get my “Learners Permit”, and then I made my appointment to take the behind-the-wheel driving test.  I felt like I was 15 again…

On Tuesday, with the assistance of dear friend (and properly-licensed) Dale Cram, I pulled the Airstream to Fontana, CA, where we found the largest spread of concrete I have ever seen at a DMV office. I went through filling out more forms, the pre-check, the pre-trip inspection, the low speed maneuvers of backing and parking around red cones in the giant concrete lot, and then we hit the road.  Right turn, left turn, around the block, onto the freeway, off the freeway, pull over to let the ambulance pass, and back to the DMV.  I passed with flying colors, and I was issued a Class A (non-commercial) Driver License, which permits me to tow a travel trailer or fifth wheel trailer up to 15,000 lbs. (The Villa weighs just 10,500 lbs…)

The rest of the week, as Lynda finished her school work, I was shopping, doing laundry, making lists, sorting lists, and gathering the last minute items we needed to pack. (We had done most of the major packing on Memorial Day weekend…)

So after a few last minute preparations on Saturday morning, and after good-bye hugs to John (and Yan), Paul, and Vicki we hit the road.  We had an uneventful drive to Kingman, Arizona, where we spent our first night in a simple RV park.  Celebratory adult beverages were consumed, and an enjoyable time was had by all.

These are pictures of leaving Irvine. Our son John (with service dog Yan) is a chemistry professor at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA, who lives with us.  My brother Paul and his wife Vicki (see their website here…) are perpetual travelers who are staying with John for these 4 months.

We had a brief stop for lunch in Barstow…

2017-06-10 Barstow, CA

Crossing over into Arizona and arriving at Kingman…

Tomorrow we head for Winslow, AZ, and Albuquerque, NM…

Irvine, CA – June 6, 2017

We’re almost ready!  Final packing and loading is underway; Lynda gave her last finals yesterday and is grading papers today and tomorrow; Graduation is Friday night, and we bring The Villa home on Friday morning. The plan is to leave Saturday about noon, and get as far as Kingman, AZ, by Saturday evening.  (There is no reason to be in a hurry to get to Kingman…)

We’ll be posting mostly daily as we travel through Winslow, Albuquerque, Amarillo, and then Bartleville, OK, and beyond. The plan is to be in the Hudson Valley of New York by June 29, and we rendezvous with the Nor by Nor’East Airstream Caravan on July 5.  Here is the description of the caravan:

Nor’ By Nor’East Caravan

Start Date: July 05, 2017      Start Location: Ashaway, RI, USA

Stop Date: August 14, 2017  Stop Location: Cornwall, PEI, Canada

Total Number of Nights:  41

Number of Stops:  11

Number of Airstreams: 23

nbyne

The Nor’ By Nor’east National Caravan will begin in southern New England and end in Prince Edward Island, Canada. We begin the caravan in RI and visit nearby Mystic Seaport, CT and Newport, RI.

Plymouth, of course, is steeped in history; the “Plimoth Plantation,” Plymouth Rock, Mayflower II, and the Jenny Museum are among the places we’ll visit.

Boston’s stop is a busy one with 2 days of bus rides from Topsfield into the Capitol. All those sites you’ve read about in history books will be part of our journey. JFK Library, Bunker Hill, Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, etc. are just part of what we’ll see.

Continuing up the coastline to an ocean-side campsite in Searsport ME and then nearby Bar Harbor in Trenton will make you a firm believer that Maine is indeed beautiful. We’ll enjoy the Penobscot Marine Museum, Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory and a Food Channel-approved ”Down East Style Lobster Bake”.

We’ll camp nearby FDR’s retreat at Campobello Island in NB, Canada, enjoy “Tea With Eleanor” and then another campsite up the road in Moncton where we will visit Hopewell Cape and see the exaggerated tides of the Bay of Fundy.

Nova Scotia’s 3 stops include campsites that will be home bases so we can travel to Peggy’s Cove, Halifax, Louisbourg, Baddeck and of course the Cabot Trail. We intend to be in NS for 11 days and we will see everything and continue to eat too!

A short trip across to Prince Edward Island on a ferry and you will think you’re in Heaven. We have plenty of time here for exploring and enjoying some entertainment in Charlottetown, the warm waters along some of the most beautiful beaches, as well as seafood-PEI style. We will have our Farewell Banquet in Charlottetown.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

We’ve been planning for this trip for many years… We intend to be back home in Mid October. We’ll see you all down the road!
